Life Onshore “Kalmar”

Since I started my career at sea I always thought that being a sailor is nothing but a prisoner with a lucrative salary. During my early year at sea most of my ships are very large crude carriers, which due to it’s ultra large size it never go along side on any port or land.

I use to say to my self that the saying, “It is so near but yet so far” is indeed true. My eyes can see the land but my foot could not reach it.

Only recently when I was assigned to smaller ships that I got the chance to go ashore when time permits. And only then I realized that we have this liberty to go out from our prison cell after working hours. Since then I don’t wanna go back to ultra large ships anymore.

But, still a lot of things needs to conspire before you get the opportunity to go ashore. There’s the weather, ship’s departure time, shore pass permits and so on and so forth.  If everything fall into place and you got that chance to go onshore, never let it slip away! It might not happen again.

So please join me as I explore Kalmar, Sweden on this snowy Febuary afternoon.

Due to limited time I don’t have the chance to get names and places that I shoot.

Probably, I’ll be going back to Kalmar for more proper documentaries.

But for now its time to go back to my home at sea.

Its around15 to 20 minutes of walk from the Kalmar city center to the main gate of Kalmar port.

And Finally back to my reality. Once again, I'm a prisoner until my next shore leave.
