How to make Croutons

Croutons is a piece of bread usually cut into cubes from fresh or leftover/stale bread, sauteed in butter or drizzled with olive oil then rebaked in the oven until golden brown. It can also be seasoned with salt and dry herbs.

Cooking it inside the oven is more convient leaving you more time to do other task in the galley, and croutons drizzled with olive oil and rebaked are best use to top salads. But since the croutons I’m making for today is specifically for Fresh and Creamy Tomato Soup, it is best to saute it on butter. And I’m so lucky to have a very reliable frying table onboard  saute all my croutons in one go. Recipe below are for bulk cooking for onboard use, just divide the amount of recipe for home use.

Crouton is a French word meaning “crust”, or the cooking process that transform the bread into the crust. While ordering it here onboard is not easy, ready-made croutons is more easy to get in most grocery stores, but you might need to pick and try each brand until you find the right taste for your palate. Making your own croutons gives you more power over the final taste of the dish in which you gonna use the croutons.

It is a must to top your Fresh and Creamy Tomato Soup, and to add flavor to your tossed salads.
