Life Onshore “Gdansk”

Sailor’s life is not always work, work, work. We also get liberty to explore the real world. I believe that “Study here! Be a Sailor and see the world for free” is the most exploited slogan for the maritime school back in the Philippines. I never attended a maritime school, but here I am… A sailor for the past 14years…

So recently M/T Ardea was called to Gdansk, Poland to load Bitumen.
My Captain ask me to buy some fresh provision in the city. I was provided with a luxurious car to do the task.
On our way to the city, we pass thru this magnificent “Inverted Y-shape bridge with very tall pylon”. Its like a gateway to the future, a portal to a new world. So, our driver “Stan” started sharing the facts about the bridge…

It was named after the late Pope Blessed John Paul II, who was born at Wadowice, Poland. Some 680km away south of Gdansk. John Paul II was acclaimed as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. He is credited with helping to end Communist rule in his native Poland and eventually all of Europe. “Pope Blessed John Paul II visited the Philippines twice, February 1981 and January 1995. Pope Blessed John Paul II have special place in every Filipino’s heart.

The Third Millennium John Paul II Bridge is a cable-stayed road bridge which spans the Martwa WisΕ‚a River in Gdansk, Poland.
It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Poland supported by a single pylon.

The bridge links the Northern Port of Gdansk with the national road network and is the first section of the future by-pass road of the city of Gdansk.
I think I say so much about the Pope 😦

And now after the bridge… Let’s go to the city πŸ™‚
